Two of the most debated definitions are the ones of leader and leadership. Suppose I were to ask 100 people the definition of the word leader. In that case, most will provide their own criteria, adjectives, and behaviors to qualify who leads them, not a definition. Even when searching the internet, experts and other sources provide their own twist to the definition. I came across a Forbes Magazine article by Josée Larocque Patton titled, “The Many Definitions of Leadership.” In it, the author concludes, “Leaders are servants to others, and that means we don’t need one specific definition of a leader”. And the reason no one can truly provide, one true definition.
Just because everyone requires a different style and or type of leader does not mean the word or world needs many definitions. The definition of doctor (MD) does not change in the dictionary or for anyone if you were to ask 100 people. The illness or condition determines the type of doctor needed. Such as changing the style or type of leader the situation requires. The definition only changes when adding a descriptive word i.e. Democratic Leader, Psychologist, MD., Micromanaging Leader, etc.
The word “leader” should have a consistent universal meaning, just as English words can vary in interpretation from place to place. We’ve all experienced visiting family or friends in other areas and saying something that leads to confusion or misunderstanding due to regional differences in language. Because the concepts of “leader” and “leadership” are global, their definitions should also be universal – applicable to every individual and circumstance. Let’s start with defining what a leader is.
Webster’s dictionary defines a leader as someone who leads or commands a group, organization, or country. The Army defines a leader as anyone who inspires and influences people to achieve goals. However, my research across books and the internet revealed many definitions, often focusing on characteristics, qualities, and behaviors rather than a simple definition of the word itself.
Since the word “leader” is universal and applies to all aspects of life, its definition should not be tied to specific adjectives, actions, or behaviors. I propose defining a leader as “the person or individual with the overall responsibility of achieving the desired result.” This definition is universally applicable and can be adapted to any situation where a leader exists, which is essentially everywhere.
